'How agencies can reinvent themselves by developing consulting services and reconfiguring their business models and tap into a new revenue source. For too long advertising agencies have been treated as vendors. They claim to be different, but most are pretty much the same and sameness always breeds differentiation based on price. There has been little innovation from agencies to migrate away from the old model of advertising.
'A couple advertising men passed away last week. Jim Schmidt was a copywriter by trade and co-founder of Downtown Partners, a creative boutique within the DDB matrix in Chicago. Mike Hughes was also a creative director and, in addition, a founding member of the Martin Agency in Richmond, Virginia. I wasn’t a friend to either of these fine gentlemen but I most certainly knew who they were, having judged awards shows with Jim and attended AAAA functions in which Mike was a key player.

And like Robin Thicke’s summer hit itself, the FTC’s workshop raised a lot of questions (and eyebrows) about the future of the medium.

'This is a long post all about me. Ten years ago this Saturday I was featured in a newspaper article about baby boomers. It was the first time I was asked about advertising and boomers. Way back in 1996 yours truly was web-writing about this motley, energetic crew – and the press would interview me and a few others because we were the only folks tossing up info for and about us: Aging Hipsters … first appeared in January of 1996.

'Business development doesn’t have to be so hard for small to midsize agencies. I’ve spent almost my entire advertising career in business development. I can tell you from my experience that agencies are historically bad when it comes to marketing themselves. It’s as if they lose their marketing minds. They tend to forget the very basics of marketing and become their own worst client.

'No automotive company has done more to alter their brand’s image than Cadillac. Via edgy product design and mostly provocative creative approach to advertising, Cadillac has taken a tired symbol of wealth (the car for white grandpa’s and stereotypical black pimps) and fashioned it into an aggressive lineup of slick and sporty vehicles. This transformation happened in recent memory.
'By some accounts discounting by retailers this holiday season has been even more widespread than usual. As we have noted previously, however, retailers must be careful not to overpromise the true value of any advertised bargain. If products are not offered often enough at a “regular” or normal price, then the sale price no longer represents genuine savings.
Creating an innovative product is just not enough. Does it drive enough value to its users? Is the product better than its competition? Is it easy enough to integrate into one’s app? Do users get a free rein on experimenting with the product while adopting it? A product’s adoption hinges on the answers to some of these crucial questions, which InMobi Analytics has undoubtedly addressed.

'“Er, I thought you liked my ignorance.” I’m not surprised, offended or even “disappointed” that Phil Robertson from A&E’s hit show Duck Dynasty went on a homophobic rant at some dumbass bible study. What I am surprised about is the network’s surprise about it. After all, that’s what ignorant white trash does: they go on homophobic rants.
'“Now that we’re alone together…” One thing that seldom gets talked about in a good way when we talk about business trips is the bonding that takes place among our traveling companions. We p**s and moan about all the hassle but upon doing it often we are quite jovial. At least I am. I like the personal time spent with my professional cohorts.

A colleague was recently telling me that in the rural Indian village she comes from, nobody builds big, beautiful homes without putting a scary-face mask outside the door to keep demons away.
